What is the minimum safety margin a designer should respect for offset and POD printing?

In short: In print on demand, the minimum safe zone is usually 6 mm from the trim and the bleed 3 mm; in offset, printers work with 3 to 5 mm bleed and a 5 mm or more safe zone. The gutter (inner margin) grows with the page count — from 10 to 12 mm in thin books to 20 mm or more in thick volumes — because the spine swallows part of the page. These are floors, not project values.

Every printed book is trimmed. A guillotine passes through stacks of sheets and leaves the block at the final format — and it does not cut in exactly the same place every time. The variation is small, one to two millimetres, but it is enough to take away a page number touching the edge or leave a white sliver where an image should run to the end. The safety margin exists to absorb that variation.

This article explains the three concepts that get confused in this conversation — bleed, safe zone and gutter — the minimum values used in print on demand (POD) and in offset, and why the designer should treat these values as a floor, not as the design.

1. Three measures, three functions

Bleed

It is the area beyond the final trim into which backgrounds, images and any element touching the edge should extend. If the trim varies a millimetre outward, the bleed ensures there is still ink there. Bleed is not visible in the finished book; it is discarded.

Safe zone

It is the area inside the final trim where no important element should sit — text, page numbers, titles, cover elements. If the trim varies a millimetre inward, the safe zone ensures nothing essential is hit. It also gives the book visual breathing room: text against the edge looks like an error even when it was not cut.

Gutter

It is the inner margin, by the spine. It needs to be larger than the others because, when the book is open, the curvature of the binding "swallows" part of the page — and the thicker the book, the more it swallows. Text too close to the spine disappears into the fold, and the reader has to force the book open to read.

A way to remember

Bleed is what you deliver extra for the printer to cut. The safe zone is what you keep so the printer does not cut it. The gutter is what you keep so the binding does not hide it.

2. Minimum values in print on demand

POD platforms — Amazon KDP, IngramSpark and the Brazilian services — publish templates with their own values, and they change. The floors below are the ones that recur most frequently and serve as a project reference; the platform's template, on the day of delivery, is what counts.

  • Bleed: 3 mm (0.125 in) on all outer edges, when the book has elements that run to the edge. Books with only text and white margins do not need bleed — but the file must be the exact size of the format.
  • Safe zone: 6 mm (0.25 in) from the trim, on the outer, top and bottom edges. Some services accept less; none recommend it.
  • Gutter: the value grows with the page count. A typical platform scale runs from about 10 mm for books up to 150 pages to 20 mm or more for volumes over 600 pages. The gutter is added to the inner safe zone, not replaced by it.
  • Cover: 3 mm bleed and a 6 mm safe zone around the whole perimeter, plus a tolerance zone around the spine — usually 1.5 to 3 mm on each side — where there should be no text, because the exact position of the fold varies.

POD has one particularity: the digital printing and finishing are automated, and the trim variation tends to be a little larger than in controlled offset. That is why the platforms' safety floors are conservative. There is nothing to gain from reducing them.

3. Minimum values in offset

In offset printing, the book is produced at a printer with its own process, and the specifications come from it, not from a platform. The most common values:

  • Bleed: 3 mm is the minimum accepted by most; 5 mm is what many printers ask for special finishes (lamination, spot varnish) or hardcovers, where covering the board requires more material.
  • Safe zone: 5 mm is the usual floor; many printers recommend 7 to 10 mm for running text, especially in large runs.
  • Gutter: it depends on the binding type. Glued paperback (PUR or hot melt) closes more and calls for a larger gutter; sewn binding allows a flatter opening and tolerates smaller values. The printer states the recommended range for the chosen page count and paper.
  • Hardcover: besides the larger bleed, there is the turn-in area — the cover paper that folds inside the board, usually 15 to 20 mm — which needs an extended background and cannot have important elements.

The advantage of offset is that the designer talks to the printer before finalising the project and can adjust the values to the real process. The disadvantage is that each printer has its own — and a file prepared for one may need adjusting for another.

When the designer asks the printer before laying out

Whenever the book has more than 300 pages, a hardcover, a special finish or non-standard paper. 4. Why the minimum is not the design

The values above are what printing requires so it does not go wrong. They are not what the reading requires so it goes right.

Book margins are a typographic decision before they are a technical one. They define the text block, the line width and the breathing room of the page — and, in the editorial tradition, the bottom margin is larger than the top, the outer larger than the inner (discounting the gutter), and together they usually occupy between 35% and 50% of the page area. A book laid out to the platform's minimums — 6 mm around the whole perimeter — fits the template and looks like a document, not a book.

The practical relationship is this: the designer designs the margins for the reading and then checks that they exceed the printing minimums. In almost every case they exceed them comfortably. 5. The same book in POD and in offset

A common mistake is preparing a file for one process and sending it to the other without adjustment. The differences that require attention:

  • Bleed and safe zone may coincide, but not always: check both templates.
  • Gutter changes according to the binding. POD almost always uses glued paperback; offset can use sewing, which allows the inner margin to be reduced a little.
  • Spine is calculated differently: each POD platform has its formula by page count and paper type; in offset, the printer measures with the real paper. A spine wrong by 1 mm shifts the spine text and misaligns the cover.
  • Colour profile and resolution have different requirements, but that is a matter of file preparation, not margins.

When the book will circulate in both processes — common in launches with an offset run for bookshops and POD for online sales — the designer designs the interior for the most restrictive case (usually POD) and generates two final files, one for each template. 6. How to check before sending

A margin checklist that fits any project:

  • Every element touching the edge extends across the full bleed — no "almost".
  • No text, page number or essential element is inside the safe zone.
  • The gutter was calculated for the final page count, not the estimate from the start.
  • On facing pages, the inner margin is the inner one on both sides — the mirrored-inversion error is common in exports.
  • The cover spine was calculated with the definitive paper and page count, and the spine text respects the tolerance zone.
  • The file is the exact size of the format plus the bleed, and nothing more.
